Dwarf perennials, 1–10 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizomes short; cataphylls 1–2, pale brown. Basal leaves ±numerous, flat, to 4.5 cm long and 3–4 mm wide. Cauline leaves up to 4, sub-basal; blades flat, to 4 cm long, to 4 mm wide, prominently parallel-veined when dry; apex obtuse; margins slightly wavy; sheath margins membranous, tapered into blade; auricles lacking. Lower bract lanceolate, leaf-like, obtuse-tipped, ±exceeding capitulum at flowering, over 2.5 mm wide; other bracts papery, castaneous, acute. Inflorescence a single terminal 2–6-flowered capitulum 0.7–1 cm in diam. Tepals ±unequal, with inner ones longer, 3.8–5.0 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, acuminate to mucronate, brown with green midrib, becoming castaneous in fruit. Stamens 6, usually shorter than tepals; anthers 0.8–1.3 mm long; filaments 2.7–3.7 mm long; ovary broadly ellipsoid, 2.5–3.4 mm long; style short, 0.5–1.5 mm long; stigmas erect, twisted, 1.5–2.5 mm long.
