Perennials, 5–15 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short. Stems erect, terete with several grooves. Cataphylls 2–3. Basal leaves 1–2, depressed-terete, bitubular, with one deep and several shallow grooves, (2–) 4–7 (–13) cm long, 0.3–0.8 mm wide; sheaths 1–2 cm long, ±stramineous; auricles scarious, to c. 0.5 mm long. Cauline leaf solitary, filiform, 1–2 (–7) cm long, sometimes exceeding stem. Lower bract scarious to straw-brown, to c. 7 mm long, shorter than inflorescence, rarely longer, leaf-like, to 1 cm long. Inflorescence a terminal (1–) 2–3-flowered head, pale brown. Flowers 5–8 mm long, 1.8–2 mm wide, sessile. Tepals ±equal, narrowly lanceolate, 3–3.5 mm long, 0.5–0.8 mm wide, subobtuse, yellowish white. Stamens 6, longer than perianth, 3.5–4.3 mm long; anthers linear elliptic, white, 0.8–1.3 mm long, c. three times as long as 2.7–3.2 mm filaments; style thick, 0.5–0.8 mm long; stigma 0.5–1 mm long. Capsules obvoid-trigonous, 4–6 mm long (incl. rostrum c. 0.5–0.8 mm long), 2.5–3 mm wide, acute-acuminate, shining, golden brown or pale brown. Seeds brown, 0.4–0.7 mm long, 0.2–0.3 mm wide, or c. 1–1.8 mm long incl. appendages c. 0.3–0.7 mm long.
