Perennials, 25–70 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizomes long, creeping-ascending, branched; stolons ±ascending. Cataphylls 1–3; lower one without blade, pale brown, to 2.5 cm long; upper ones to 6 cm long, with short green blade. Cauline leaves 2–5; blade to 15 cm long, c. 1.5–2.5 mm wide; auricles short, obtuse to truncate. Lower bract c. 7–10 cm long, ±exceeding inflorescence; capitulum bracts ovate-lanceolate, to c. 6–7 mm long, shorter than perianth, castaneous-brown or brown, distally pale or scarious. Inflorescence 5–7 cm long, rich, decompound, of 7–9 cup-shaped usually 4–7-flowered heads c. 1.0–1.5 cm wide. Tepals ±unequal, lanceolate, ±brown, acute; outer tepals c. 7–8 mm long, with an indistinct to distinct paler margin distally; inner tepals c. 5.0–6.5 mm long. Stamens 6; anthers c. 2.8–3.7 mm long, ±not exserted; filaments to c. 1.0 mm long; style (incl. beak) c. 2 mm long; stigmas exserted, c. 3–4 mm long. Capsule oblong-ellipsoid, to c. 8.5–9.5 mm long, gradually tapering to 0.7–1.5 mm beak, brown, shiny, longer than perianth. Seeds ellipsoid to narrowly ovoid, c. 0.8 × 0.25–0.3 mm, pale brown, slightly reticulate and c. 20-striate; appendages subequal, c. 0.8–1.5 mm long.
