Perennials, 12–22 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short, short-noded, ±ascending, not creeping. Cataphylls 0–2, loose, brownish or purplish; basal leaves 1–2. Cauline leaves 0–1, inserted in lower half of stem, to 1 (–1.8) mm wide, ±unitubular, indistinctly and ±imperfectly septate; apex subobtuse; auricles much reduced, scarious or brownish. Lower bract sheath-like or leaf-like, erect, 1–2.5 cm long, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence a single ±pseudolateral sessile, (1–) 3-flowered head; flowers usually arranged at the same level horizontally, sometimes with a tendency to form a vertical row. Tepals subequal to unequal; outer tepals longer, ±lanceolate, acute to subacute, 5–6 mm long, brown to deep castaneous-brown; inner tepals c. 4.0–4.8 mm long, obtuse to subacute, with margins indistinct or slightly paler. Stamens 6, subequalling to slightly exceeding tepals; anthers 0.6–0.9 mm long; filaments 2.5–3.8 mm long; style including mucro c. (0.8–) 1.3–1.7 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule oblong-ellipsoid, c. 6.0–7.5 mm long (excluding the stylar rostrum to 1.7 mm long), obtuse to subacute, dark castaneous-brown, not shiny, distinctly exceeding perianth. Seeds narrowly ellipsoid; seed body c. 1.0–1.3 × 0.3 mm long, pale brown, or c. 2.5–3.1 mm including two subequal appendages 0.7–1.0 mm long.
