Perennials, 20–50 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short, densely branched. Stem erect, sea-green. Cataphylls 3–6, 3.0–4.0 cm long, acute, shining yellowish brown. Cauline leaf single, sea-green, sub-basal, terete, unitubular, 10–30 cm long, 0.4–0.7 mm wide; auricles very short, obtuse; leaves on sterile shoots 25–70 cm long, 0.3–0.6 mm wide. Inflorescence solitary, of a single terminal (pseudolateral) 3–5-flowered head, 1.0–2.0 cm wide; middle bract castaneous-brown, longer than flowers; lower bract linear-lanceolate, 2.5–3.7 cm long, 4–6 mm wide, castaneous-brown; sheath-like bract absent from peduncles. Pedicels 0.5–5.0 mm long. Tepals lanceolate; inner tepals shorter, 5.0–8.0 mm long, 1.1–1.6 mm wide; outer tepals 5.5–9.4 mm long, 1.5–1.8 mm wide, castaneous-brown, sometimes with paler central band. Stamens 6, shorter than perianth; anthers linear-elliptic, yellowish, 2.5–3.8 mm long, longer than 0.8–1.2 mm filaments; style 3.0–4.0 mm long; stigmas 3.0–4.5 mm long; ovary ovoid-trigonous, 2.5–3.0 mm long, 1.5–1.8 mm wide. Capsule unilocular, ovoid-trigonous, c. 4.5–5.5 mm long including a short mucro, subobtuse to truncate, shining, deep castaneous-brown. Seeds ellipsoid, c. 0.6–0.8 × c. 0.3 mm, or c. 1.5 mm long including two appendages 0.3–0.5 mm long.
