Perennials, 10–20 cm tall, caespitose; rhizomes creeping-ascending, thin, densely branched. Stem ±stout, erect, grooved. Cataphylls 1–2, brownish; basal leaves 1–3, terete, grooved, 3–9 cm long, 0.7–1.2 mm wide; sheaths 2–3 cm long. Leaves on sterile shoots 2–5 cm long, 0.3–0.6 mm wide; sheaths 1–2 cm long; auricles obtuse to subacute, 0.5–1.2 mm long, brownish, rarely scarious. Lowest bract appearing as a continuation of stem, 1–3 cm long. 0.8–1.1 mm wide, grass-green, much exceeding flowers. Inflorescence pseudolateral, of a single sessile, 1–3-flowered head 0.5–1.1 mm wide; capitulum bracts 2; sheath-like bract absent. Flowers 3–7 mm long, 2–3 mm wide; pedicels to 0.3–0.4 mm long. Tepals lanceolate; inner tepals longer, 3.0–3.5 mm long, 0.9–1.1 mm wide, ±obtuse, distally with broad membranous margins; outer tepals 2.5–2.8 mm long, 0.75–0.85 mm wide, subacute, mucronate, deep castaneous-brown, shining. Stamens 6, as long as perianth, 3.2–3.5 mm long; anthers shorter than filament, ellipsoid, pale yellow, 0.8–1.0 (–1.5) mm long; filaments 2.0–2.5 mm long; style c. 0.5 mm long; stigmas 1.2–1.4 mm long. Capsule unilocular, ovoid-trigonous, acuminate, 3.0–4.0 mm long including c. 0.5 mm rostrum, 1.2–1.5 mm wide, castaneous-brown, ±exceeding perianth. Seeds narrowly oblong-ovoid, apiculate, 0.8–1.0 mm long, 0.20–0.26 mm wide; appendages absent or minute.
