Perennials, usually 5–15 (–22) cm tall, caespitose, with short-noded rhizome, often with elongated subterranean stolons. Leaves usually basal, ±erect, 2–4 (–8) cm long, c. 0.5–1.0 mm wide, 1–3-tubular at base, unitubular above, septate; septa not or scarcely visible externally; auricles indistinct (sheaths often with brownish dilated margins); apex initially ±acute, later subobtuse. Lower bract erect, subherbaceous to tepaloid, brown, exceeding or ±equalling inflorescence, to 1.0–1.5 (–4.0) cm long; middle bract brown-membranous, shorter than perianth. Inflorescence a single ±pseudolateral, (1–) 2 (–4)-flowered head; flowers arranged in a vertical row; upper flowers on pedicels to 2 mm long. Tepals subequal, oblong-ovate, 2.5–3.3 mm long, ±obtuse, dark brown to castaneous brown, pale margins narrow or absent. Stamens 6, often slightly longer than perianth; anthers c. 0.3–0.4 (–0.6) mm long; filaments to 2.8 mm long; style 0.3–0.4 (–0.7) mm long; stigmas c. 0.7–1.2 mm long. Capsule oblong, c. 4–5.5 (–8) mm long, much longer than perianth, slightly trigonous, retuse, ±mucronate, usually pale greenish brown with dark margins.
