Perennials, 25–75 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stem terete, 1.1–2.5 mm in diam. Cataphylls 0–1. Cauline leaves 2–4, mostly sub-basal, 1–2 in upper part of stem, ±equalling stem, unitubulose, perfectly septate, terete to ±compressed, c. 1.3–2.8 mm wide; auricles 1–3 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, 4–14 cm long, usually shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence diffuse, c. 5–22 cm long, decompound, of c. 5–20 subglobose c. 5–20-flowered heads c. 1 cm in diam. Tepals ±equal or inner ones longer, ±lanceolate; outer tepals carinate and 3-veined, c. 3.0–4.3 mm long, acuminate, stramineous-brown, often castaneous at apex, with margins broad and membranous. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–0.6 mm long; filaments c. 1.0–1.2 mm long; style c. 0.1 mm long; stigmas c. 0.5–0.8 mm long. Capsule unilocular, narrowly ovoid to oblong, 3–4.5 mm long, subequalling to slightly exceeding perianth, subacute and apiculate or subobtuse, subabruptly narrowing, golden brown to dark golden brown. Seeds oblong-ovoid, apiculate, c. 0.6 × 0.2–0.3 mm, pale brown, longitudinally c. 16–20-striate, reticulate, with areolae transversally lineolate; appendages absent.
