Perennials, 19–59 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizomes relatively stout, creeping. Cataphylls brownish. Cauline leaves up to 4, stiffly erect, arranged along stem; blade narrow, semi-cylindric, septate (septa not visible externally), to 30 cm long, 0.9–1.9 mm wide, gradually tapered to fine point, canaliculate; margins very finely serrulate; auricles conspicuous, free part c. l × 2 mm, sometimes tinged brown. Lower bract leaf-like, conspicuously exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence terminal, branched; capitula usually (2–) 3–5 (–12), unequally peduncled, 3–10-flowered; flowers subsessile. Tepals equal, lanceolate, acute, 4.5–6.2 mm long, reddish-brown; outer tepals with greenish midribs; inner tepals with membranous margins and tips. Stamens 6, shorter than tepals; anthers 0.9–1.5 mm long; filaments 2.7–4.5 mm long; ovary narrowly ellipsoid, 2.6–4.5 mm long, tapered into 1.0–1.7 mm style; stigmas 1.9–3.6 mm long. Capsule castaneous, shining, narrowly oblong- to ellipsoid-trigonous, conspicuously exceeding tepals, 6.1–8.3 mm long; mucro 0.7–1.4 mm long. Seeds 0.5–0.7 mm long, or c. 3.0–3.2 mm including two ±equal appendages each 1.0–1.3 mm.
