Perennials, to 150 cm tall. Stem terete, smooth, up to 6 mm in diam. Cataphylls 0–3 per stem, inserted ±apart, to 10 cm long; margins scarious; apex rounded with rudimentary acicular blade to 4 mm long. Leaves cauline, 3–7, evenly distributed along stem, to 40 cm long, terete, unitubular, perfectly septate, 2–3 (–4) mm in diam.; sheaths to 10 cm long; margins scarious; auricles scarious, rounded, c. 4 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, 2–6 cm long, much shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence decompound, repeatedly anthelate, to 25 × 15 cm, of 15–35 heads; heads globose at maturity, to 15 mm in diam., each 10–30-flowered; main branches 2–10 cm long, 0.5–1.5 mm in diam. Tepals equal, 3.0–4.5 mm long, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, pale green, usually ±suffused purplish; margins narrow, distinct, scarious. Stamens 3, 0.9–1.0 mm long; filaments filiform, to c. 1.5 mm long; style c. 1 mm long; stigmas c. 1.0 mm long. Capsule obclavate, unilocular, trigonous at base, ±pyramidal at apex, 4–6 × 1.0–1.5 mm, distinctly exceeding perianth, golden yellowish brown. Seeds oblique, ellipsoid, c. 0.7 × 0.3 mm, yellowish brown, reticulate, with short (c. 0.2 mm) appendages.
