Perennials, (40–) 60–80 (–100) cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizomes creeping. Stems erect, terete, c. 3–7 mm in diam. in the middle, with 2–3 basal leaves. Leaves flat, grass-like, with basal leaves 2–3 and cauline ones 2–3, 10–65 cm long including sheath, 5–8 mm wide; auricles obliquely truncate; margin entire. Lower bract ±leaf-like, usually 8–30 cm long, longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence 8–20 cm long, anthelate, with 1–5 thick main branches, of 1–5 subcontracted groups of heads; heads 4–18, usually 5–12-flowered, 0.8–1.2 cm wide, with several capitulum bracts; bracts lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 3–7 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, brownish. Pedicels 0.5–1.0 mm long. Tepals subequal, lanceolate; inner tepals slightly shorter than outer, 4.8–5.5 mm long, 0.9–1.2 mm wide; outer tepals 5–7 mm long, 1.0–1.4 mm wide, brown. Stamens 6, shorter than perianth, 4–5 mm long; anthers shorter than filaments, linear-elliptic, 0.7–1.8 mm long; filaments 2.3–3.0 mm long, pistils 7–8 mm long; styles 0.5–0.8 mm long; stigmas 1.6–1.8 mm long, ovaries ovoid-trigonous, 5–6 mm long, 1.5–2.0 mm wide. Capsule usually pale brown, narrowly oblong-ovoid, 6–8 mm long. Seeds broadly ellipsoid, c. 0.7–0.9 × 0.2–0.3 mm, brown, c. 2.8–3.3 mm long including two appendages 1.0–1.3 mm long.
