Perennials, 10–40 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stem terete. Cataphylls 0–2, pale purplish to brownish, ±loose. Cauline leaves 2–3, unitubular, perfectly and distinctly septate, 4–12 cm long, to c. 2 mm wide; auricles ±obtuse, pale brownish to stramineous-scarious, 1–2.5 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 1–4 cm long, shorter than or equalling inflorescence. Inflorescence decompound, 2–7 cm long, of (2–) 6–10 (–20) obconical remote 2–6-flowered heads. Tepals ±equal with central part castaneous to dark brown and base often greenish; outer tepals ±lanceolate, c. 2.5–3.2 mm long, ±acute to subobtuse and mucronate; inner tepals ±obtuse; margins broad, scarious. Stamens 3 or 6; style 0.4–0.5 mm long; stigmas c. 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule trigonous, ovoid-ellipsoid, unilocular, 3.5–4.6 mm long, shortly rostrate, distinctly exceeding perianth, dark brown, shining; capsule segment apex often slightly recurved at dehiscence. Seeds ellipsoid, pale brown, c. 0.6–0.7 × 0.2–0.3 mm, or c. 1.2–1.7 mm long including two c. 0.2–0.5 mm appendages.
