Perennials, c. 20–50 cm tall, densely caespitose. Rhizome short, very short-noded. Cataphylls 1–4; lower ones 1–2 cm long; uppermost cataphyll to 4 cm long. Stem erect, smooth, terete. Sub-basal leaves 1–2. Cauline leaves 1–2; sheath 3–7 cm long; auricles usually unequal, subobtuse, to c. 3 mm long; blade terete to slightly compressed, 8–15 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, unitubular, perfectly septate; septa externally conspicuous. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 3 cm long, shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence erect, anthelate, decompound, with 1–3 elongated erect stout main branches, of 5–15 heads; heads 8–15-flowered, c. 6–8 mm in diam., often clustered in larger subglobose groups. Tepals ±equal, lanceolate, 3.3–4.0 mm long, acute, pale brown to castaneous; central band ±distinctly 3-veined; margin broad, membranous. Stamens 3–4 (–6), shorter than tepals; anthers 0.4–0.5 mm long; filaments linear, dilated at base, 1.0–1.5 mm long; style c. 0.1–0.2 mm long; stigmas to c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule unilocular, trigonous-ovoid, 3.0–3.2 mm long, shorter than perianth, with rounded and minutely mucronate apex, pale castaneous, shining. Seeds ellipsoid, c. 0.4 × 0.2 mm, apiculate, reticulated; appendages absent.
