Perennials, (10–) 20–40 cm tall; rhizome stout, creeping, short-noded. Cataphylls 3, one with a reduced leaf-blade; sub-basal leaves 1 (–2). Cauline leaf 1 or absent, 3–20 cm long, 0.5–1.5 (–2.0) mm in diam., unitubular, perfectly septate, polygonal in T.S., with 9–17 longi-tudinal ridges; auricles 0.5–1.5 mm long, obtuse, thin. Lower bract leaf-like, 0.5–3.0 (–8.0) cm long, ±longer than inflorescence; upper bracts dark brown to scarious. Inflorescence (25–) 50–100-flowered, consisting of a single 0.5–1.5 cm wide agglomeration of heads. Tepals subequal, 3.0–3.7 mm long, narrowly ovate, acuminate to cuspidate, blackish brown; margins indistinct. Stamens 6; anthers 0.6–0.9 mm long; filaments 0.6–0.9 mm long; style 0.9–1.1 mm long; stigmas 1.3–1.8 mm long. Capsule ovoid-trigonous, 3.0–3.2 mm long, acuminate, narrowing into 0.4–0.7 mm rostrum, dark brown, equalling or ±shorter than perianth. Seeds ellipsoid, 0.50–0.55 × c. 0.25 mm, c. 25-striate with rows of hexagonal fields; appendages absent.
