Perennials, (20–) 35–80 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome densely and irregularly branched, 2.5–3.5 mm in diam., stoloniform. Stem 1–4 mm in diam., terete, sometimes with small elongated nodules near base. Cataphylls usually absent, sometimes 1–2, scarious, not different from leaf sheaths; basal leaves 1–3. Cauline leaves 1–2 per stem, 20–70 cm long, ±terete, 2–5 mm in diam., unitubular, conspicuously septate; sheaths 5–15 cm long, sometimes nodulate; auricles scarious, rounded, 1.0–3.5 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, 3–13 cm long, shorter to longer than inflorescence; capitulum bracts castaneous to stramineous with scarious margins, c. 3.5 mm long. Inflorescence abbreviated or anthelate, up to 7 cm long and 15 cm wide, of 1–20 conical (later semiglobose) many-flowered heads 10–15 mm in diam. Tepals equal, lanceolate, acute, 3.8–4.6 mm long, green, later stramineous or more often castaneous; margins scarious. Stamens 3; anthers 0.5–0.8 (–1.0) mm long; filaments c. 1.0 mm long; style 0.4–0.5 mm long; stigmas c. 0.5 mm long. Capsule narrowly ellipsoid, acute and apiculate, trigonous, unilocular, 2.9–4.2 × 1.0–1.3 mm, equalling perianth or longer, dark to blackish brown. Seeds narrowly ellipsoid, apiculate, 0.7–0.9 × c. 0.3 mm, reticulate, yellow-brown; appendages absent or minute.
