Perennials, 10–30 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short, densely branched. Stems erect, terete, grooved. Cataphylls 3–6, shining, yellowish brown; basal leaves absent; Cauline leaf single, inserted about the middle of stem, terete, unitubular, indistinctly septate, grooved, 10–28 cm long including sheath, 0.7–2.0 mm wide; sheaths 1–4 cm long; auricles rounded, scarious, to c. 0.5 mm long; leaves on sterile shoots usually solitary, shorter than stem, 8–28 cm long. Lower bract shorter than inflorescence, leaf-like, terete, 1.0–3.0 cm long. Inflorescence of 2–3 (–4) globose (echinate) usually (5–) 7–15-flowered heads 5–10 mm wide, grass-green; terminal head sessile; peduncle of lateral head 0.5–5.0 cm long; sheath-like bract present on peduncle, membranous, lanceolate, 1.5–2.0 mm long; capitulum bracts linear-lanceolate, 0.2–3.0 cm long, 0.6–2.0 mm wide. Flowers normally developed or proliferating, mixed in the same inflorescence, with former also sterile, 0.6–0.8 cm long, 2.2–2.5 mm wide; pedicels 0.5–1.2 mm. Tepals ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, acute; inner tepals slightly longer, 5.5–6.8 mm long, 0.9–1.3 mm wide; outer tepals 4.3–4.6 mm long, 0.8–1.4 mm wide, grass-green. Stamens 6, exserted; inner stamens shorter than the outer, 8–10 mm long; outer stamens 1.1–1.2 cm long; anthers shorter than the filaments, linear-elliptic, ivory-white, 2.0–3.5 mm long; filaments 5.6–8.0 mm long; style 1.8–2.0 mm long; stigmas 0.6–0.8 mm long; ovary ovoid-trigonous, 5.0–6.0 mm long, 1.5–1.9 mm wide. Proliferating flowers 3.5–6.0 mm long, 0.7–1.5 mm wide, grass-green; stamens and pistils degenerated.
