Perennials, 25–65 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short, densely branched. Cataphyll one or absent, maroon or dark green, with apex obtuse; basal leaves 1, 3–20 cm long. Cauline leaves 2–3, 3–20 cm long, terete to compressed, perfectly septate (septa ±visible externally, distinct in dry condition), unitubular, c. 1 mm in diam.; tip acuminate; auricles 1–2.1 mm long, rounded, membranous. Lower bract leaf-like, green turning castaneous, terete, 5–7 cm long, shorter than the inflorescence, erect; other bracts castaneous, narrowly ovate or terete, 0.6–4 cm long. Inflorescence decompound, of 30–70 (–130) heads, 5–20 cm tall, with erecto-patent branches; heads hemispherical or usually turbinate, (1–) 2–10-flowered, 5–10 mm in diam. Tepals subequal; outer tepals often slightly longer, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, acuminate, (2–) 2.6–3.2 mm long, green to stramineous; inner tepals (1.8–) 2.3–3.0 mm long, ±linear-lanceolate; margins narrow, scarious, distinct. Stamens 3, not exserted; anthers 0.4–0.5 mm long; filaments 0.6–0.9 mm long; style indistinct; stigmas 0.3–0.4 mm long. Capsules unilocular, linear-lanceolate in outline, trigonous, acute, 4.3–6.0 mm long, stramineous-brown to pale castaneous-brown, much (usually at least twice) exceeding perianth. Seeds ±ovoid, apiculate, 0.3–0.4 × 0.2–0.3 mm, pale brown, reticulate; appendages absent.
