Perennials, to c. 35 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Stem ±compressed, sometimes two-angled, to c. 2 mm wide, ±erect. Cataphylls to c. 3 cm long, loose; blade much reduced. Leaves mostly cauline, 2–4, double-edged-compressed, to c. 3 (–4.5) mm wide; sheath compressed, dorsally acute-angled; auricles obtuse, c. 0.3 mm long, membranous. Lower bract leaf-like, usually to 3 cm long, shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence decompound or supradecompound, anthelate; branches ±erecto-patent, of 4–5 to usually many ±irregularly globose 6–10-flowered loose heads c. 1 cm in diam.; flowers squarrosely arranged in heads. Capitulum bracts membranous, ovate-lanceolate, c. 2 mm long. Tepals subequal; outer tepals usually slightly shorter, linear-lanceolate, long acuminate, greenish to stramineous, usually 3-nerved, with margins indistinct or very narrow, paler, c. 3.0–3.5 mm long; inner tepals c. 3.3–3.8 mm long. Stamens 3; anthers c. 0.5–0.6 mm long; filaments 1.3–1.4 mm long; style indistinct, short, c. 0.1 mm long; stigmas subsessile, recurved, to c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule unilocular, narrowly prismatic-trigonous, (3.8–) 4.5–5.5 mm long, gradually narrowing in a short thick mucro, pale brown, shiny, exceeding perianth. Seeds oblong-ellipsoid, pale brown, c. 0.5 × 0.2 mm, apiculate, indistinctly reticulate; appendages absent.
