Perennials, 15–22 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome c. 1.2 mm diam., creeping, with pale brown scales. Leaves of vegetative shoots ±equalling stem, c. 0.7 mm wide, acute, unitubular, canaliculate, with margins minutely rough and hyaline, septate, with septa not visible externally. Cataphylls short, reddish brown. Cauline leaves 1–2, sub-basal, usually one inserted about or above middle; upper culm leaf with conspicuous reddish brown sheath and blade sometimes exceeding inflorescence; auricles scarcely produced, c. 0.5 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, 2–9 cm long, slender, erect, overtopping inflorescence; base membranous reddish brown. Other bracts glume-like, brown. Inflorescence of (1–) 2 (–3) very congested 3–5-flowered heads on short (3–8 mm) peduncles, appearing as a single head. Tepals dark reddish brown, greenish white at base, with extreme apex hyaline; outer tepals narrowly lanceolate, finely acuminate, concave, keeled, 5.3–5.5 × 0.7–1.1 mm; inner tepals oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, 4.5–5 × 1–1.2 mm. Stamens 6; anthers exceeding filaments, 2.5–2.9 mm long, cream; filaments 1.2–1.5 mm long; ovary narrowly ovoid, 2–2.5 mm long, gradually tapered into style; style c. 2 mm long; stigmas erect, pale brown, 4–4.3 mm long. Ripe capsule and seeds not known.
