Perennials, 65–135 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome stout, horizontal, creeping, 3–8 mm in diam., with sparse scarious scales and internodes 1.5–2 cm long. Stem 2.5–5.5 mm in diam., terete. Cataphylls loose, conspicuous, 1–3 per stem, basal, some rarely inserted to 20 cm from base, stramineous to brown; lower cataphyll to 6 cm; upper cataphylls to 20 cm long; rudimentary blade 4–6 mm long, acicular. Cauline leaves 1–3, 25–75 cm long, unitubular, perfectly septate; septa not distinct, 2.0–4.5 mm in diam.; sheaths 7–16 cm long with margins scarious; auricles 2–4 mm long, scarious, obtuse. Lower bract 3–13 cm long, leaf-like or sheath-like, usually shorter than inflorescence; floral bracts much shorter than perianth. Inflorescence decompound, anthelate, to 20 × 7 cm, sometimes subcongested, of 7–45 globose 20–40-flowered heads 7–15 mm in diam., stramineous; main branches to 12 cm long, to 1.5 cm thick. Tepals ±unequal, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, ±stramineous to pale brown; outer tepals 3–4 mm long, ±carinate; inner tepals 2.5–3.5 mm long. Stamens 3; anthers 0.4–0.8 mm long; filaments c. 1.0–1.2 mm long, filiform; style c. 0.7–1.0 mm long; stigmas c. 1 mm long. Capsule unilocular, ±ovoid, trigonous, 1.9–2.7 mm long including rostrum, remaining connate at rostrum region during dehiscence, shorter than perianth, pale brown.
