Perennials, (15–) 20–40 (–50) cm tall; rhizome stout, creeping, short-noded. Cataphylls 3, one with a reduced leaf-blade; sub-basal leaves 1 (–2). Cauline leaf one or absent, 10–20 cm long, 1–2 mm in diam., unitubular, perfectly septate, polygonal in T.S., with 9–17 longitudinal ridges; auricles 0.5–1.5 mm long, obtuse, thin. Lower bract leaf-like, 1–5 cm long, usually exceeding inflorescence; middle and upper bracts dark brown. Inflorescence c. 50–100-flowered, usually consisting of a single globose, 0.5–1.5 cm wide agglomeration of heads, rarely heads two. Tepals cequal, 2.5–3.5 mm long, narrowly ovate, acuminate or cuspidate, dark to blackish brown; margins paler, narrow. Stamens usually 3, rarely 1–2, very rarely to 6; anthers 0.8–1.3 mm long; filaments 0.6–1.0 mm long, anther/filament ratio 0.9–1.3; style 0.3–0.6 mm long; stigmas 0.9–1.2 mm long. Capsule broadly ellipsoid-trigonous to prismatic, 2.0–2.5 mm long, subobtuse, subabruptly narrowing to 0.2–0.3 mm rostrum, shorter than perianth, dark brown. Seeds ellipsoid, 0.5–0.6 × 0.2–0.3 mm, c. 25-striate, with rows of hexagonal fields; appendages absent.
