Perennials, 60–90 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short, short-noded, c. 3 mm in diam. Stem 2–3 mm in diam., terete. Cataphylls 0–1 per stem, to 7 cm long; basal leaves 1–2. Cauline leaves 1–2, 10–45 cm long, terete, 1–5–3 mm in diam., unitubular, conspicuously, perfectly septate; sheaths 4–8 cm long; margins scarious; auricles obtuse, 2–3 mm long, scarious. Lower bract leaf-like, 3–7 cm long, much shorter than inflorescence, with most distal bracts scarious and c. 2 mm long. Inflorescence decompound, anthelate, 10–20 × 5–12 cm, of 8–17 globose 10–35-flowered heads 10–13 mm in diam.; distal branches c. 0.5 mm thick. Tepals subequal (inner ones often slightly longer), lanceolate, acute, 2.5–3.0 mm long; outer tepals carinate, castaneous. Stamens 3; anthers 0.6–0.8 mm long; filaments c. 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule unilocular, obclavate, trigonous (valves ±concave), 4.0–4.5 mm long, gradually tapering into acute apex, distinctly longer than perianth, castaneous.
