Perennials, 10–75 cm tall; rhizome long, creeping, usually long-noded; stoloniform; stem usually single per node, ±rigid, c. 2–3 mm in diam. Cataphylls 0–2, loose, brownish to reddish-castaneous; leaves mostly basal and sub-basal. Cauline leaves 0–2 (–3), mostly in lower part of stem, pluritubular, indistinctly septate; leaf apex ±obtuse; margins papillose-serrulate; sheaths loose, with margins brownish-membranous; auricles ±absent or minute. Lower bract leaf-like. Inflorescence of 1–5 (–12) hemispherical or broadly obconical, (1–) 2–7 (–15)-flowered heads, with one subsessile and the others on erect straight rigid peduncles; capitulum bracts ±lanceolate. Tepals subequal or outer ones slightly longer, acute to subacute, c. 4.5–7 mm long. Stamens 6, usually slightly shorter than tepals; anthers shorter than filaments; connective with a short mucro. Capsule triseptate, oblong-ellipsoid, distinctly exceeding perianth. Seeds ellipsoid; seed body pale brown, c. 0.7–0.9 × 0.2–0.3 mm, or c. 2.5–4 mm long including two subequal appendages 0.9–1.5 mm long.
