Perennials, 30–100 cm tall, caespitose to densely caespitose; rhizome short, densely branching. Stem usually ±rigid, to 4–5 mm in diam. Cataphylls 1–2 or absent, stramineous; basal leaves 1, 7–22 cm long. Cauline leaves 2–3, 7–22 cm long, to 3.5 mm in diam., terete, unitubular, perfectly septate (septa visible externally, distinct in dry condition); tip dark, acute; auricles 1–1.2 mm long, rounded, scarious. Lower bract leaf-like, terete, 3–7 cm, shorter than the inflorescence, erect; other bracts leaf-like, lanceolate, 3–13 mm long. Inflorescence umbelloid to anthelate, of 3–50 heads, 2–20 cm tall, with erecto-patent to ±ascending branches; heads obconic to spheric, 5–50-flowered, 3–10 mm in diam. Tepals subequal, lanceolate, green or stramineous, later often pale brown and suffused reddish, acuminate; inner tepals usually slightly longer, 2.9–4 mm long; outer tepals 2.7–3.8 mm long, usually distinctly 3-veined. Stamens 3 (–6), not exserted; anthers 0.3–0.5 mm long; filaments 0.8–1.5 mm long; style 0.2–0.3 mm long; stigmas 0.5–0.9 mm long. Capsules imperfectly trilocular, narrowly oblong to ±ellipsoid, acute below the 0.3–0.5 mm rostrum, 3.3–4.5 mm long, castaneous-brown, equalling or exceeding perianth.
