Perennials, usually 15–30 cm tall, densely caespitose. Rhizome very short, horizontal. Cataphylls 1–2, lax. Stem erect, thin, 1.0–1.5 mm in diam., terete to slightly compressed. Basal leaves several. Cauline leaves usually 2–3, most often 5–8 cm long, c. 0.7–1.2 mm in diam., shorter than stem, unitubular, perfectly septate; septa visible externally, prominent; apex acute; sheaths lax, long, broadly bordered membranous; auricles oblong, obtuse, c. 2–3 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like but reduced, to c. 2 cm long, much shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence anthelate, very lax, 5–13 cm long, of 5–10 obconical to semiglobose 5–8-flowered heads 5–7 mm wide. Tepals equal to nearly so; outer tepals sometimes slightly longer, 3.0–3.5 mm long, lanceolate, acute to acuminate; central band brownish, indistinctly 3-veined; margins membranous. Stamens 3; anthers c. 0.7–0.8 mm long; filaments c. 0.8 mm long; style c. 0.2 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule unilocular, ellipsoid-trigonous, 2.0–2.5 mm long, subacute, usually ±equalling perianth, castaneous-brown, shining. Seeds elipsoid, apiculate, 0.4–0.6 × c. 0.2–0.3 mm, reticulate; appendages absent.
