Perennials, 8–40 cm tall, soft, caespitose; rhizome densely and irregularly branched, c. 2 mm in diam.; stem to 20 cm tall, shorter than leaves, terete, 1–2.5 mm in diam., smooth or with small transverse nodules, sometimes branching in leaf axils. Cataphylls ±absent; basal leaves 1–2. Cauline leaves 0–2 per stem, 6–40 cm long, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., terete when fresh, unitubular, conspicuously septate; sheaths 1–6 cm long; margins scarious; auricles scarious, rounded, 1.0–2.5 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, 4–20 cm long, distinctly exceeding inflorescence; capitulum bracts 2–3 mm long, scarious. Inflorescence a terminal head or a terminal or seemingly pseudolateral anthela to 7 cm long and 10 cm wide, of a single globose head up to 40-flowered and c. 10 mm in diam., or of up to 7 conical 6–7-flowered heads c. 5 mm in diam. Tepals equal, 3–4 mm long, lanceolate, acute, brown to reddish; margins whitish-scarious, conspicuous. Stamens 6; anthers c. 0.5 mm long; filaments filiform, c. 1 mm long. Capsule thin-walled, unilocular, oblong to obovoid, ±trigonous, 2.3–3.0 × 1.3–1.6 mm, ±apiculate, golden brown to dark brown. Seeds ellipsoid, apiculate, 0.4–0.5 × c. 0.2 mm, brown, reticulate; appendages absent.
