Perennials, 13–35 cm tall, hairy caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves usually 5–12 cm long and 2–3 (–4) mm wide. Cauline leaves 1–2, with upper ones usually 3–6 cm long and 2–3 mm wide. All leaves with obtuse, slightly swollen tip and margins with very remote, often reddish serrulation. Inflorescence of 1–2 (–4) ±sessile clusters; flower head often lobate, usually 1–1.5 × 1–1.5 cm; partial clusters often few-flowered, 6–10-flowered. Lower bract herbaceous, obtuse, erect to ±patent, 1.5–3.5 (–4.0) cm long, overtopping inflorescence. Bracteoles c. 1.5–2.0 mm long, scarious, ovate, acuminate, ciliate. Tepals ±equal, entire, or inner ones with a few teeth below apex, dark castaneous brown, with broad pale straw-brown margins, 2.7–3.6 mm long. Stamens 6; anthers 0.9–1.2 mm long; filaments 0.4–0.5 mm long; style c. 0.5 mm long; stigmas 2.0–3.0 mm long. Capsule oblong-obovoid, subacuminate or short mucronate, shorter than perianth, pale brown; capsule segments 2.3–2.6 mm long, 1.5–1.8 mm wide. Seeds (1.0–) 1.2–1.3 mm long, c. 0.8 mm wide; seed-coat distinct; appendage c. 0.2 mm long, fibrillate.
