Perennials c. 7–14 cm tall, stout, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves numerous, 3–5 (–8) cm long, 3–4 mm wide Cauline leaves 1–2, 3–4 cm long, to 3–4 mm wide; margins sparsely ciliate, densely papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bracts 1–3, ±stiff, reddish, leaf-like, 1.0–1.8 (–3.0) cm long, erecto-patent, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence a densely congested head of c. 1–4 (–6) sessile indistinct clusters, many-flowered, usually (0.5–) 0.8–1.2 cm in diam. Bracteoles broadly ovate, whitish-scarious, c. 1.5 mm long. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, lanceolate, acuminate, c. 2.4–2.9 mm long, dark castaneous-brown to blackish-brown; margins distinct, broad, pale brownish-membranous. Stamens 6; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long; filaments 0.5–0.6 mm long; style 0.2–0.3 mm long; stigmas 0.7–1.0 mm long. Capsule ±ovoid, ±obtuse, shorter than perianth, dark castaneous-brown; capsule segments 1.8–2.0 × c. 1.1 mm; mucro c. 0.1 mm long.
