Perennials, 15–25 (–35) cm tall, sparsely ciliate, loosely caespitose; rhizome short, oblique to ascending; stolons absent. Basal leaves usually 4–8 cm long, 2–4 mm wide. Cauline leaves 2 (–3), c. 4–8 cm long, 2.5–3.5 mm wide, with leaf and bract margin papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse, ±swollen. Inflorescence composed of 1–3 subsessile and usually 2–4 (–8) pedunculate clusters; clusters ±hemispherical, 3–5 (–9)-flowered, 4–5 × 5–6 mm. Peduncles thin, ±smooth, often flexuose to slightly arcuate, usually 2.5–5.0 cm long; secondary branches not rare (0–2 branchings per inflorescence, usually on the longest peduncle), short. Lower bract herbaceous, (1.0–) 1.5–2.0 (–4.0) cm long, shorter than inflorescence. Bracteoles membranous, ovate, up to 1 mm long, sometimes brownish, sparsely ciliate above. Tepals ±equal, entire, dark blackish-brown with pale margins above, broadly lanceolate, 1.6–1.8 mm long. Stamens 6; anthers 0.5–0.7 mm long; filaments c. 0.5 mm long; styles 0.4–0.6 mm long, longer than ovary; stigmas 1.2–1.5 mm long. Capsule conspicuously exceeding perianth, ellipsoidal, subacute; capsule segments blackish castaneous brown, usually 1.6–2.0 × 1.1–1.3 mm.
