Perennials, 12–30 cm tall, densely caespitose, base often reddish; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves ±flat, ±soft, c. 8–14 cm long, 2–4 (–6) mm wide; cauline leaves 1–2, to c. 6 cm long; margins sparsely hairy, often ±swollen, smooth to sparsely papillose; apex obtuse. Lower bract 1.5–2.5 cm long, herbaceous, usually ±equalling inflorescence. Inflorescence ±ovoid, of c. 5–10-flowered clusters 0.6–0.8 mm in diam., sometimes all clusters subsessile; peduncles straight, later some drooping, smooth, to c. 2 cm long. Bracteoles ovate, entirely scarious or brownish at base, to c. 1.5 mm long. Tepals ±equal, broadly lanceolate, acute to acuminate, 2.5–3.2 mm long, usually dark castaneous-brown; margins distinct, ±narrow, whitish-scarious. Stamens 6; anthers 0.7–1.3 mm long; filaments 0.4–0.5 mm long; style c. 0.6 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5–2.0 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, subacute, ±equalling perianth, dark castaneous-brown, ±papillose; capsule segments 2.3–2.5 × c. 1.4 mm.
