Perennials, c. 15–35 (–80) cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome branched, creeping-ascending; stolons ascending. Basal leaves flat, (3–) 4–8 (–14) cm long, (1–) 2–3 (rarely to 6–7) mm wide; cauline leaves 1 (–2), 2.5–4 (–8) cm long; margins sparsely ciliate, densely papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 2–4 cm long, ±erect, usually overtopping inflorescence, often subtending a slightly remote cluster; second lower bract usually similar, shorter. Inflorescence composed of (1–) 2–4 (–5) clusters; clusters subsessile, subcylindrical, 5–12-flowered, c. 6–9 mm long; proximal cluster often ±remote, with others approximated, forming an elongated lobulate head 1–2 (–3) cm long. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, ±ciliate, 1.0–1.5 mm long. Tepals ±equal, broadly lanceolate, 2.2–2.7 mm long; outer tepals acuminate; inner tepals ±acute, ±castaneous-brown; margins distinct, broad, pale to scarious. Stamens 6; anthers 0.5–0.9 mm long; filaments c. 0.3–0.5 mm long; style 0.3–0.5 mm long; stigmas c. 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule ±ovoid, subobtuse, ±shorter than perianth, castaneous-brown, papillose above; capsule segments 1.9–2.1 × c. 1.2–1.3 mm. Seeds oblong-ovoid, brown, 1.0–1.1 mm long, c. 0.7 mm wide; appendage 0.2–0.3 mm long. 2n=12 [12AL], fide H.Nordenskiöld, Bot. Not. 122: 72–73 (1969), as L. australasica.
