Perennials, (7–) 10–20 (–35) cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome usually long, creeping and ascending; stolons rare, short. Basal leaves ±flat, 6–16 cm long, 2.0–3.5 mm wide. Cauline leaves 1–2, 2.5–8.0 cm long, 2.0–2.5 (–3.0) mm wide; margins ciliate, swollen, smooth or sparsely papillose; apex subobtuse. Lower bract c. (1.0–) 2.5–4.5 cm long, usually shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence very loose, with numerous secondary branches, 2–6 cm long, to 3–4 cm wide; flowers usually solitary or in 2–3-flowered clusters, rarely more contracted; peduncles straight, erect to erecto-patent, smooth. Tepals subequal, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, c. 3.0–3.9 mm long, acuminate-aristate, castaneous-brown; margins narrow, scarious. Anthers (0.8–) 1.3–1.7 mm long; filaments 0.5–0.6 mm long; style 0.8–1.2 mm long; stigmas not exserted, c. 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule segments pale brown castaneous-brown, 2.3–2.5 × 1.4–1.5 mm. Seeds ±narrowly ovoid, 0.9–1.1 mm long, 0.8–0.9 mm wide; appendage 0.05–0.15 mm long.
