Perennials (25–) 30–40 (–70–120) cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short or ascending; stolons absent. Basal leaves numerous, to c. 20 (–30) cm long, usually 2–4 mm wide, rarely to 20 mm wide, ±flat. Cauline leaves 2–3, often involute, 5–8 (–20) cm long, to c. 7 mm (rarely to 12 mm) wide; margins swollen, ±smooth to papillose, ciliate to sparsely ciliate; apex obtuse to subacute. Lower bract c. 4–5 cm long, longer or rarely shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence variable, either of 3–6 clusters on short unbranched peduncles or rich, to 30-clustered with many secondary branches; clusters of echinate appearance, subglobose, 5–10 (–12)-flowered, c. 0.8–1.0 cm long, 0.7–0.8 mm wide; peduncles smooth, 2–4 (–8) cm long, stiffly erect or erecto-patent. Tepals subequal, narrowly lanceolate (rarely linear-lanceolate), 2.8–4.4 mm long, acuminate, subulate, stramineous to pale brown, pale castaneous at base; margins very broad, membranous. Anthers 0.6–0.8 (–1.1) mm long; filaments (0.5–) 0.7–1.0 mm long; style 0.5–0.9 mm long; stigmas, c. 1.5–2.5 mm long. Capsule segments 2.2–2.7 × 1.5–1.8 mm. Seeds ellipsoid, 1.0–1.2 (–1.4) mm long, c. 0.7–0.8 mm wide.
