Perennials, 10–25 cm tall, densely caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves often suffused purplish, c. 3.5–5.0 cm long, 2–3 mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, 3.5–7 cm long, to c. 2.5 mm wide; margins ±sparsely ciliate, papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract usually 1.5–2.0 cm long, erecto-patent, exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence contracted into a ±conical lobulate head, to 1.8 cm long, of 2–5 ±sessile clusters or rarely one on smooth peduncle to 1.5 cm long; clusters c. 8–13-flowered. Bracteoles ovate, to 1.0 (–1.5) mm long, membranous, often brownish at base, sparsely ciliate-fimbriate. Tepals ±equal, glabrous, ±oblong-lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, 1.9–2.5 mm long; outer tepals acuminate, brown to castaneous-brown, rarely darker; margins ±membranous, usually broad. Stamens 6; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long; filaments c. 0.5 mm long; style 0.1–0.2 mm long; stigmas 0.7–1.2 mm long. Capsule narrowly ovoid, subacute, shorter than perianth, ±castaneous-brown; capsule segments 1.9–2.1 × c. 1.1–1.2 mm.
