Perennials 12–40 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short; stolons absent. Basal leaves 5–11 (–15) cm long, 2.5–3.5 (–6.0) mm wide, soft; cauline leaves 2–3, c. 3.5–7 cm long; margins sparsely to moderately ciliate, usually papillose-serrulate; apex obtuse. Lower bract herbaceous, c. 1.5–6.0 cm long, shorter to longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence variable, either of subsessile clusters only or of 1–3 subsessile and 2–5 (–10) pedunculate clusters; clusters hemispherical to subglobose, c. 5–12-flowered, 5–7 mm in diam.; peduncles straight, ±erecto-patent, distally papillose, rarely ±smooth, 0.5–1.5 (–3.0) cm long, often abbreviated. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, c. 1.5 mm long, sparsely ciliate. Tepals subequal (inner ones often ±shorter), ±lanceolate, acuminate, (2.0–) 2.5–3.0 (–3.5) mm long, dark brown to pale castaneous-brown; margins distinct, broad, whitish-scarious. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–1.5 mm long; filaments 0.4–0.9 mm long; style 0.5 (–8) mm long; stigmas c. 1.2–1.5 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, subobtuse, pale brown, sometimes reddish, usually papillose near top, subequalling perianth; capsule segments 2.2–2.5 × 1.3–1.5 mm long.
