Perennials c. 15–35 cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome short, shoot base usually bulbous; stolons absent. Basal leaves flat, 7–14 cm long, c. 3–4 (–6) mm wide; cauline leaves 2–3 (–4), 2.5–10 cm long; margins usually densely ciliate, sparsely papillose; apex obtuse. Lower bract leaf-like, c. 3.0–6.5 cm long, often equalling or overtopping inflorescence. Inflorescence composed of 1–3 subsessile and (1) 3–25 pedunculate clusters; clusters ±globose to subglobose, c 10–22-flowered, c. 5–6 mm in diam.; secondary branches frequent, usually distal; secondary peduncles often abbreviated (and then some pedunculate clusters compound, to 10 mm in diam.); peduncles straight, erect to reclinate, c. 1–6 cm long, smooth, rarely slightly papillose distally. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, to c. 1.5 mm long, ciliate-fimbriate. Tepals ±equal, rarely with outer ones longer, ovate-lanceolate; outer tepals acuminate; inner tepals acute, c. 1.8–2.5 mm long, usually pale castaneous-brown to pale brown; margins broad, membranous to creamy-whitish. Stamens 6; anthers 0.3–0.7 mm long; filaments 0.5–0.6 mm long; style 0.2–0.4 mm long; stigmas 0.8–1.0 mm long. Capsule broadly ovoid, subobtuse, castaneous-ferrugineous, smooth, rarely slightly papillose, subequalling to slightly exceeding perianth; capsule segments 1.8–2.1 × 1.3–1.4 mm.
