Perennials, densely caespitose, usually robust; rhizome short to ascending; stolons absent. Leaves often very broad with basal leaves often almost as long as stem; tip obtuse, swollen; margins smooth, ±swollen. Lower bracts herbaceous. Inflorescence many-flowered, of a single congested head or composed of several to many mostly pedunculate clusters; peduncles smooth. Tepals equal, glabrous, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, acuminate, usually (2.0–) 2.6–4.0 mm long. Stamens 6; style usually (0.2–) 0.6–1.5 mm long; stigmas usually 1.5-3.0 mm long. Capsule usually subacute, shorter than perianth. Seeds ovoid to ellipsoid, usually dark castaneous-brown; appendage whitish, 0.1–0.2 mm long.
