Perennials, to 20 cm tall; stolons ±absent. Basal leaves canaliculate, to 8 cm long, to 2.5 mm wide; cauline leaf 0–1, to c. 3.5 cm long; margins subglabrous (a few hairs confined to blade base), ±swollen, smooth; apex acute, or subobtuse with acute mucro. Lower bracts 1–2, herbaceous, erecto-patent, subequalling to exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence congested in a single head or with 1–3 shortly pedunculate c. 8–15-flowered clusters. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, c. 1.5 mm long, subentire. Tepals ±equal, acuminate or inner ones ±acute, (2.0–) 2.4–2.8 (–3.2) mm, dark castaneous, dark brown or blackish brown; margins narrow, distally distinct. Stamens 6; anthers 0.9–1.3 mm long; filaments 0.4–0.5 mm long; style c. 0.6–0.9 mm long; stigmas c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule oblong-ovoid, acute, dark castaneous-brown, smooth, equalling or shorter than perianth; capsule segments 2.2–2.5 × c. 1.4 mm.
