Perennials, 15–30 cm tall, ±sparsely ciliate, with branched creeping rhizome and short ascending stolons. Basal leaves 6–9 cm long, 2.0–3.5 (–4.5) mm wide; cauline leaves usually 2, 3–4 cm long, 1.5–3.0 mm wide; all leaves with obtuse tip and sparsely papillose to smooth margins. Inflorescence composed of 1–3 subsessile and 2–6 pedunculate clusters; clusters hemispherical, (3–) 5–7(–9)-flowered, dark, c. 5 × 5 mm; peduncles straight to flexuose, ±smooth, usually 1.5–2.0 (–3.0) cm long. Lower bract herbaceous, conspicuously shorter than inflorescence, usually 1.0–1.5 cm long. Bracteoles ovate, scarious, 1.0–1.5 mm long, shorter than tepals, sparsely fimbriate-ciliate above. Tepals equal, entire, usually 2.3–2.7 mm long, acuminate, dark (blackish) brown, seldom with indistinct pale margins. Stamens 6; anthers 0.7–0.9 (–1.1) mm long; filaments 0.4–0.5 mm long; style 0.6–0.9 mm long; stigma 1.5–2.2 mm long. Capsule subacuminate, ±shorter than tepals, brown, shining; capsule segments c. 2.0–2.4 mm long, up to 1.5 mm wide. Seeds 0.9–1.0 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide; appendage 0.2 mm long.
