Perennials, 50–100 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome horizontal, densely branching. Stem stout, leafy throughout, 1.5–3.0 mm in diam. Cataphylls 1–2, stramineous; basal leaves 0–1, 2.5–22 cm long. Cauline leaves 2–3, 2.5–22 cm long, c. 1–3 mm in diam., much shorter than stem; blade rigid, unitubular, perfectly distinctly septate, smooth; tip acute; sheaths tight, narrow; auricles 0.2–0.4 mm long, obtuse, leathery. Lower bract leaf-like, terete, 1.5–2 cm long, much shorter than the inflorescence, erect; other bracts castaneous, lanceolate, 3–1.1 mm long. Inflorescence supradecompound, diffuse, of 30–100 heads, 3–9 cm tall, with erect or ascending branches; heads obconic, 2–8-flowered, 4–8 mm in diam. Tepals unequal, lanceolate; inner tepals 2.8–3.5 mm long, acute; outer tepals 2.5–2.8 mm; tepals green to reddish brown, acuminate or mucronate, distinctly 3-veined (particularly inner tepal midrib prominent), with margins distinct and membranous. Stamens (3–) 6, not exserted; anthers 0.6 mm long; filaments 1.2–1.7 mm long; style 0.3–0.5 mm long; stigmas 2 mm long. Capsules ±triseptate to trilocular, pyramidal from ovoid base, acutely trigonous, acuminate, 4–5 mm long, castaneous-brown, much exceeding perianth. Seeds pale brown, reticulate, 0.8–1 × 0.2–0.3 mm, or 1.8–2.6 mm long including appendages; appendages subequal, 0.6–0.8 mm long. Fig. 87.
