Perennials, c. 7–27 cm tall, with stems single or few together from short-noded rhizome; stolons short, subterranean. Stems erect, purplish. Cataphyll usually 1, 1–2 cm long; blade 1–2 mm long; basal leaves 2–4, to 5–7 cm long, c. 0.4–0.8 mm wide, slightly canaliculate at base, otherwise subterete, irregularly pluritubular, imperfectly septate with septa not or scarcely visible externally; sheath to c. 2–3 cm, with margins broad, membranous; auricles broadly ovate, c. 1 mm long, truncate to obtuse, membranous to brownish. Cauline leaf 1, 1.5–3.5 cm long; apex acute. Lower bract subherbaceous, to 1–2 cm long, often exceeding capitulum; middle bracts ovate, membranous, shorter than perianth. Inflorescence terminal, single-headed, less often of 2–3 heads, lateral on erect 1–2 cm peduncles; heads (1–) 2–3 (–4)-flowered. Tepals equal or outer ±longer with outer subacute and inner ±obtuse, 3.5–5.0 mm long; midrib 3-veined, stramineous or purplish; margins broad, membranous. Stamens 6, shorter than or subequalling tepals; anthers 0.3–0.5 mm long; filaments filiform, to (2–) 3–4 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid, pale straw-brownish, 4.5–9.0 mm long, exceeding perianth. Seeds ellipsoid, with distinctive loose whitish parenchymatous outer seed-coat, to 1.2 mm long, or to 3 mm long including two subequal appendages.
