Perennials, 11–56 cm tall, caespitose; rhizome short-noded, densely branching. Cataphylls short. Leaves of non-flowering shoots to 9 cm long; apex obtuse; margins narrowly hyaline, minutely papillose; lower surface ridged. Cauline leaves 2–4, evenly spaced, 3–8 cm long, 2–4 mm wide; leaf sheaths 2–7 cm long, reddish, lacking auricles. Lower bract leaf-like, about equalling inflorescence; capitula bracts shorter than capitula, reddish, ovate. Inflorescence usually of 2 superposed anthelae with 6–21 capitate partial inflorescences; capitula 2–6-flowered, to 7 mm diam. Outer tepals 2.4–2.8 × c. 0.7 mm, narrowly lanceolate, acute, keeled, whitish-membranous, flushed pinkish brown near centre and apex; inner tepals 3.0–3.5 × c. 1 mm, similar in shape, whitish. Stamens 6; anthers exserted, 0.7–1 mm long, pale yellow, oblong; filaments 3.0–3.4 mm long, exceeding tepals; ovary c. 3.7 × 2 mm, brown, narrowly ovoid, tapered into beak-like style c. 1.2 mm long; stigmas 0.6–0.8 mm long, ±spreading. Capsule 5.5 × 2.5 mm, narrowly ovoid, dark reddish-brown, shining; mucro 0.5 mm long; immature seeds 0.4 mm long, or c. 2.2 mm including appendages c. 0.9 mm long. Fig. 62.
