Perennials, 8–70 cm tall, rhizomatous or subcaespitose. Rhizomes short-creeping to long-creeping or ascending, branched, usually tuberous, 2–4 mm in diam. Stem terete, greyish green. Cataphylls 1 or absent, castaneous-brown, obtuse; basal leaves 1–2, 2–23 cm long. Cauline leaves 2–3, 1.6–26 cm long, green, terete, perfectly septate, with septa distinct externally and prominent in dry condition, unitubular, usually to 2 mm in diam.; tip blunt; auricles rounded, membranous, 1–2 mm long. Lower bract leaf-like, terete, 1–6 cm long, shorter than to slightly longer than the inflorescence, erect; other bracts stramineous, lanceolate, 3–11 mm long. Inflorescence of 1–23 (–32) heads, usually 1–5 subsessile with others arranged in anthelate form on rigid branches and peduncles, 2.5–9 cm tall, with ascending to erect branches; heads 20–60-flowered, spheric or usually lobed, 6–11 mm in diam., greenish to stramineous-brown. Tepals subequal, narrowly lanceolate with subulate apex, green or later stramineous, often suffused reddish, acuminate, 2–3.5 mm long; margins narrow, scarious. Stamens 3, not exserted; anthers c. 0.4 mm long; filaments 1.3–1.4 mm long; style 0.2–0.3 mm long; stigmas 0.6–1 mm long. Capsules unilocular, lanceolate in outline, tapering in subulate apex, 3–4 mm long, stramineous, exceeding perianth; valves not separating at dehiscence. Seeds ellipsoid-ovoid, apiculate, 0.4–0.5 × 0.2 mm, light brown, distinctly reticulate; appendages absent. Fig. 100.
