Perennials, c. 20–40 (–55) cm tall, loosely caespitose; rhizome ascending or horizontal, branched; stolons often present. Stem compressed, c. 1.5–2.5 mm wide. Cataphylls (0) 1–2, brownish or brownish-purplish, to c. 4 cm long, gradually changing in basal leaves. Cauline leaves 2–4 (–5), usually 7–15 cm long, 1.5–3.0 (–4.5) mm wide; sheaths with broad membranous margins; auricles ±absent or present, up to c. 1.2 mm long, acute or obtuse. Lower bract ±leaf-like, erect, c. 1.0–3.5 (–5.0) cm long, usually shorter than inflorescence. Inflorescence of c. 7–20 heads on 2–4 main branches; secondary branches often abbreviated and inflorescence thus of 1–4 decompound lobulate groups of heads; heads usually (5–) 10–12-flowered, ±semiglobose, c. 6–8 mm wide (groups of heads to 1.3 cm wide). Capitulum bracts pale brown, stramineous-membranous to castaneous, c. 2.5–3.5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate. Tepals subequal to unequal, lanceolate; outer tepals acuminate, 2.7–3.4 mm long; inner tepals acute to acuminate, often shorter, c. 2.5–3.0 mm long, pale brownish to deep castaneous-brown, with central band often greenish; margins ±narrow. Stamens 6 (rarely 3–5); anthers 0.5–1.0 mm long; filaments 0.5–1.0 mm long; style 0.5–0.7 (–1.0) mm long; stigmas to c. 1.5 mm long. Capsule unilocular, oblong-ellipsoid, subobtuse, ±abruptly narrowing in c. 0.2 mm mucro, c. 2.4–3.5 mm long; segments c. 1.2 mm wide, deep castaneous-brown, smooth, shorter than, ±equalling or slightly exceeding perianth.
