Perennials, 40–110 (–210) cm tall, loosely caespitose, pale green. Rhizome long, creeping; internodes 0.5–2 cm long. Stem rigid. Cataphylls 2–3; cauline leaf single, 20–40 cm long, inserted in upper part of stem; separate basal leaves 50–100 cm long; all leaves terete, pluritubular, with a distinct central cavity, perfectly or imperfectly septate; septa distinct and visible externally. Lower bract 1–3 cm long, sheath-like; blade reduced, usually to 1 cm long. Inflorescence of 10–80 semiglobose to globose 8–30-flowered heads on ±patent branches; main branches usually 2–5. Tepals equal, ovate, 2.0–2.5 mm long, acute to apiculate. Stamens 6; anthers 0.5–0.7 mm long; filaments c. 0.8–0.9 mm long; style c. 1 mm long; stigmas 1.0–1.5 mm long. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, subtrigonous, trilocular, with a rostrum to 0.5 mm long, equalling to slightly exceeding perianth, dark brown, shiny.
